NASK 2023: La arto de tradukado

Marto–Junio (virtuala)

12-semajna studrondo por altnivelaj lernantoj (kaj diligentaj progresantoj)

NASK-2023: The art of translation

March–June (online)

A 12-week study group for advanced students (and dedicated progresantoj)

Datoj Dates

Zoom-sessions on Wednesday evenings, from March 15th to May 31st.

This course will be a relatively relaxed, contemplative “study group” lasting 12 weeks, for the most part without a fixed schedule. Each week we’ll read a new essay, interacting in an online, text-based forum where we can discuss the main ideas. Our discussions will occur asynchronously, so you can participate as you please, at whatever time of day works for you.

Each Wednesday we’ll also have a synchronous meeting in Zoom, from 8:30 – 10:00 pm US Eastern Time (UTC-4). These Zoom sessions will not be obligatory, and will be recorded for those who cannot participate.

Priskribo Course Description

Respekta malkonsento kaj bone rezonitaj argumentoj estos tre bonvenaj.

Literature is among the most expressive means of conveying human experience, and conveying human experience across cultures is the raison d’être of Esperanto. Literary translation therefore has a special place in the language. What’s more, Esperanto itself was born of literary translation, and translation continually enriches the language, helping it to evolve.

Naturally, no single course can teach one how to be a good translator. But we can learn much from the advice of our predecessors, profiting from their translation struggles. In this course we’ll read essays and commentaries from translators both famous and infamous. We’ll consider their sometimes contradictory viewpoints, giving special attention to how we might apply their ideas to the challenges of Esperanto translation. Depending on student interest, we’ll look at essays by William Auld, Gaston Waringhien, L.L. Zamenhof, Fernando de Diego, Humphrey Tonkin, Anna Löwenstein, Istvan Ertl, Ferdinand de Saussure, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Jorge Luis Borges, and Vladimir Nabokov. Roughly half of the material will be in Esperanto, and half in English—with Esperanto summaries.

Requirements: You do not need to be an experienced translator! You need only an interest in the art of translation and its many challenges. Our working language will be Esperanto, so you should be capable of reading and writing in the language comfortably; ideally you should be at level B2 or higher on the CEFR scale. (You don’t need to have taken the actual exam; what matters is how you rate yourself.) Some of the essays will be in English, and occasionally we’ll consider translation dilemmas involving English as either a source or target language. So while the ability to understand complex English texts is not a strict requirement, it will be very helpful.

This course is based primarily on discussions, so it will work best if everyone participates with questions, ideas, comments, and reactions. Respectful disagreement and reasoned argument is very welcome.

Instruisto: Hoss Firooznia Instructor: Hoss Firooznia

As a college student in 1991, Hoss discovered a strange linguistic phenomenon called “Esperanto.” He quickly tumbled into the bottomless rabbit hole of its culture and literature, where he continues falling even today. Along the way down he studied Esperanto formally at the University of Hartford and UC San Diego, earned a CEFR certification (C1), became editor of Usona Esperantisto, taught Esperanto courses at the University of Rochester, and worked many summers for NASK. He writes the Traduku! column for Usona Esperantisto with Lee Miller and Tim Westover. His translations have appeared in Beletra Almanako, La Ondo de Esperanto and in the La aventuroj de Ŝerloko Holmso (Sezonoj, 2013). In 2015, his translation of O. Henry’s short story Lost on Dress Parade won the Liro prize.

In 2021 he earned an MA in Literary Translation Studies from the University of Rochester, where his work dealt mainly with the original literature of Esperanto. For his thesis he translated Spomenka Štimec’s 1984 novel Ombro sur interna pejzaĝo into English.

Professionally, he works as an IT administrator at the University of Rochester in western New York.
